.I’m hoping they’ll let me give it to Uncle Tony.”Cas silently cursed. It was yet one more thing the federal agent in him longed to study. He had to remind himself that after he delivered Joey to the hospital, he planned to resign his position with the Bureau anyway.“Do you know the code?”“No.It would’ve been up to Uncle Tony to teach me if I’d joined the family business.” Joey closed the Bible.Cas got on I94 and headed south. He hadn’t asked about the money Joey had taken from the safety deposit box because, frankly, it wasn’t any of his business. His growing feelings for the man at his side had absolutely nothing to do with money.Joey had asked earlier if Cas wanted to see the photo album, and although the temptation was definitely there, Cas had declined. The fact that Joey had offered told Cas everything he needed to know.“How far from Bloomingdale to Marion?” Joey asked.“I thought we’d spend the night on the southeast side St.Louis, which is around four and a half hours from Bloomingdale. We can make the drive to Marion in the morning and get there in plenty of time for your meeting with Tony.” Cas hesitated to bring up the only glitch in their original plan.Warren was being a real asshole.“I got a call from Warren. You’ll only have fifteen minutes with Tony before you’re escorted to a waiting plane.”“Before I’m escorted? What about you?” Joey asked.Cas tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.“I’ll be on the same plane, but not with you, and to be honest, that’s probably for the best.I think it’ll be better for both of us if Warren believes I’ve seduced you into visiting your father. At least until we can get that part over with and get you the hell away from Chicago.”“What if they search my suitcase and find that?” Joey asked, pointing to the money in the backseat.“We’ll find a UPS store tomorrow and ship it to Zane along with the book.” Cas squeezed Joey’s thigh.“Don’t worry, you can trust him with it.”“I do.” Joey worried his lip for several miles before speaking again.“What if the Feds try to keep me?”Cas worried about the same thing, but he didn’t want Joey to know it was a possibility. He wished he knew what Warren’s end game was.“Well, we know the Feds are desperate to have your father’s testimony, but if Joe told them about the book, they’re probably after that as well.”“I’m not giving them the book.”Cas tried to think of a solution to their problem.Again, without knowing exactly what was in the book, it was hard to offer an opinion on what should be done with it.“I’m sure the Feds have a list of Tony and Joe’s known associates. What if you go through the book and remove the pages you don’t want the Feds to see? If they start pressuring you about the book, you could eventually give in and give them the safety deposit box key. They’d believe they got what they were after, and it would be one last issue that you have to worry about in the future.”“That’ll take a while to do.There’re, like, eight hundred pages in that thing,” Joey said.“I’ll get you the time and the place if you’re willing to do it.” Cas would probably have to drive well into the night to make up for the change in plan, but it would be worth it.Joey nodded his head as he turned to stare out the passenger window. It was easy to see that Joey was uncomfortable with the plan, but Cas couldn’t think of anything else. The Lo Russo and Barbati secrets weren’t Cas’s problem.Keeping Joey safe was.Chapter SixJoey was seated on the hotel room floor when Cas returned with dinner.“Hey,” he greeted.Cas set a bucket of chicken, a sack, and two large drinks on the credenza.“I hope you like mashed potatoes and green beans.”“You can have the green beans.” Joey tilted his head back and smiled as Cas lowered for a quick kiss.“How’s it going?” Cas stared down at the piles of discarded pages.“Well, I left everyone who’s died of natural causes, guys I don’t remember seeing at all, workmen, staff throughout the years, and the people I’m sure the Feds are already onto. Most importantly, I left in all the photographs of my father’s mistresses throughout the years.Kind of a little payback gift from my mother.” Joey pointed to the larger stack.“Those are definitely not going back into the album. The smaller stack is harder. Those, I’m not sure about because I need the pages to fill out the book, but I’m worried because I have no idea who any of those people are.”Cas joined Joey on the floor.“Want me to take a look?”Joey picked the sheets up and clutched them to his chest. He trusted Cas, but he also didn’t want to put the agent in an awkward position.Would giving them to Cas put Cas in danger? On the other hand, Cas was already risking his career, and perhaps his life, just by trying to protect Joey. With a deep breath, Joey passed the pages over.“It’s up to you.”Cas’s eyes narrowed as he studied each photograph.Other than a few deep grunts, he didn’t say a word as he began sorting the stack into two piles.Once he was finished, he slid one of them toward Joey.“Those are fine to put back in.They appear to be minor players, so it wouldn’t be worth the time and money to investigate them further.”Joey immediately began to put the photos back into the book according to the dates written on the bottom of each picture.Cas held up the stack he’d held back.“These are leverage.”“Politicians,” Joey surmised.“Four senators, six congressmen, and an ex-mayor.But this,” Cas held up a single picture, “is the golden ticket. This has to be the reason they want the book so much.” He handed Joey the photograph.“That’s George Q.Brennan, Deputy Director of the FBI.Although from the date on this photograph, I’d say he was a Special Agent at the time.”Joey grabbed the picture and stared at the fuzzy image.“Are you sure?”“Yeah.”“So you think I should use it as leverage?” Joey asked.“No.I think you should put this one back in the book.If it really is what they’re looking for, it should be enough to satisfy them. The others are a contingency in case I’m wrong.” Cas leaned in and kissed Joey’s neck.Abruptly, he pulled away and stood.“Once we eat and you get everything back into that album, we need to head out.”Joey got to his feet.“Are you mad at me?”Cas spun around.“Mad at you?” He pulled Joey into his arms.“Not for a second.”“Then why’d you jump up and turn away from me like that?” Joey asked.Chuckling, Cas leaned down to brush Joey’s lips with a soft kiss.“I just know that if we don’t get away from that bed as soon as possible we won’t make it back to the bank before it closes.Joey melted against Cas.He’d become addicted to the guy’s cock.“Bed or in the backseat of the car along the highway. If you’re horny, we should take care of it.”Cas made a deep rumbling sound.“If we took care of it every time it happened, we’d never get out of bed.” He smacked Joey on the ass.“I’ll control myself until we get to St.Louis.”* * * *After suffering through a very thorough pat-down, Joey waited for the guard to inspect the Bible
