.It only happened yesterday.Jeremy said we had to move fast—and we did.” She chuckled and patted his arm.“I had to dig deep into my savings account, but I expect to be rewarded by the owner of GoldTech International when he gets his breath back.” Linda smiled at her son.“There are enough there to secure your total control of the company. You can tell MultiTechnol to kiss your hiney.”“Mom!” Logan leapt to his feet and pulled her into his arms.Logan knew that shareholders buying up others’ stock in the company could be seen as a ‘poison pill’ by the market, perhaps even affecting shares adversely, but he’d make sure none of his investors would suffer.“Oh, Mom, thank you, thank you.I have to call Uncle Jeremy too and thank him.You have no idea what this means to me.”“Of course I do, silly. It means you’re still the boss!”* * * *Kevin’s cell was ringing as he got out of the shower. He checked the caller ID.“Hi, Cindy. Are you feeling better?”“Some.I just had Loretta from GoldTech on the phone. She needed your address to send you your cheque.”“Oh right, thanks.”“How’d it go? He’s a doll, isn’t he?”“Yes, he is.It was great until…”“Yeah, I heard. He’s got to be feeling completely lost, poor guy. That company is everything to him.”“Yes, it is.”“Steve said”—Cindy sounded hesitant—“uh, that you guys seemed to hit it off really well.”“We did.I’m afraid I kinda fell for him, Cindy. And now it looks like I’ll never see him again.”“Oh, Kevin, I’m sorry. But he is going to have a pile of crap to sort out.I expect he’ll be so caught up in that…” Her voice trailed off.“I know.I’m dealing with it.What I need to concentrate on is finding a job.”“Right.I’ll ask around. You might try SouthAir.Only problem is they have a revolving door for employees. Can’t seem to keep anyone for very long.”Kevin grimaced.“I’ll give them a call anyway. Thanks, Cindy.Talk at you later.”He sat at his computer again, depression weighing on him like a damp blanket.Okay, this won’t do.He typed in SouthAir and went to their site. There we go—’Contact us for employment opportunities’.He picked up his phone.* * * *Logan had called a board and shareholder meeting, and smiled secretly as he entered the room where the few remaining shareholders were seated along with Dick Martin, his VP, and Loretta. He had already briefed Dick and Loretta about what he was going to announce, so their smiles were bright as they told him, “Good morning.”“Morning all.” He grinned at the expectant faces around him.“I spent the last several hours of yesterday talking with the honchos at MultiTechnol, and you will be happy to hear there will be no takeover of GoldTech by them.”“How did you manage that?” somebody asked, not being overly polite.“Five thousand extra shares, which puts me back in control of the company.”There was an audible gasp from around the table.Logan flashed them his million-watt smile.“Isn’t this great? GoldTech is safe, so safe that the stock value went up as of, oh…” He looked over at Loretta, whose eyes were glued to the screen of her laptop.“Exactly thirty seconds ago,” she exclaimed, “and the price is still climbing!”“So every one of you is a lot richer than the ones who bailed on us,” Logan told them.“A lot richer. If I were you I’d be on the phone to my stockbroker right now, buying before they go through the roof.”Excited chatter broke out as cells were produced and numbers punched in.Logan winked at Loretta and Dick.“And that about wraps it up.”He just had one more thing to do.* * * *Kevin, fresh out of the shower, was stuffing a couple of T-shirts and briefs into his backpack when he heard a knock at his door.He hoped it wasn’t somebody selling religion—he just didn’t have time to listen to their spiel. His first flight with SouthAir left at one, and he couldn’t be late for his first day on the job.He had been amazed at how easy it had been to get a flight attendant’s position with the company.Of course, the pay was lousy and there were no benefits, but it would do until he found something better. He opened the door and almost fell over when he saw Logan standing there, looking just as fantastic as Kevin had seen him in his mind’s eye so many times over the past several days.Holy shit!“Can I come in?” His voice was low, sexy, just like Kevin remembered. The shy smile was back, and Kevin felt a lurch in his stomach and his knees grow weak.“Logan,” he said faintly.“Yeah, come on in.This is a surprise.I didn’t think I’d see you again.I mean, the way you said goodbye.Or rather didn’t say goodbye.”“I know.Kevin, I can’t tell you how sorry I am about that.”Kevin gave him a small smile.“Well, you can try.”“Right.You’re not going to make this easy, are you?”“Should I?” Kevin felt this had to be said.“When you got off the phone that last day we were together it was like I’d become the invisible man.You never looked directly at me, not once.I wanted to help, to comfort you, but you shut me out completely.I know we hadn’t known each other very long, but in that space of time we’d shared so much with each other—of each other.I truly thought you cared about me.”“I did.I do.” Logan raked his hand through his hair.“You’re right, of course.I was a total bastard.I have this thing, Kevin, this need, when something goes wrong, especially with the company, I have to fix it.I’m afraid I become obsessed until it’s fixed.Only, when this happened it felt like the end of the world.Like it was unfixable. It took me over, consumed me, this feeling of failure.” He smiled wryly, his blue gaze locked on Kevin.“I fixed the company, but I failed you.”Kevin’s eyes widened.“You saved the company? That’s great. You must be really happy.”“Yes.Thanks to my mother and uncle.” He reached out and stroked Kevin’s cheek.“Only one thing would make me happier.”Kevin hesitated. This was what he’d wanted, wasn’t it? To have Logan back in his life, to hold him, kiss those sensuous lips, feel that hard body pressed to his.But could he trust him this time? He wanted to.More than anything, he wanted that. His heart trembled when that shy, uncertain smile flitted across Logan’s face.“Kevin, I—”He caught Logan’s hand and pressed his lips to it.“Logan…” He could hear the tremor in his voice, but couldn’t control it.“I have missed you.”Without a moment’s hesitation, Logan pulled him into his arms and kissed him gently. The touch of his lips inflamed Kevin’s senses
